Mission
“Then the King will say to those on His right hand,
‘Come, you blessed of My Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
‘for I was hungry and you gave Me food;
I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;
‘I was naked and you clothed Me…’ Matt 25:34-36
Problems Mama Tina Resource Center is facing:
Over two million people are known to be infected with AIDS in Kenya, with millions more untested. AIDS sufferers progressively lose their ability to work leading to increasing poverty and lack of food.
Predominance of cultural beliefs causes the disease to be misinterpreted leading to complacency about HIV as a life threatening disease.
When their parents get sick or die from AIDS many Kenyan children cannot meet their basic needs.
In order to survive most of these children are forced to quit school after their parents die. They are unable to inherit any of their parents assets, if they possessed any, because of the complex legal processes that it entails.
Many times their spouses are also infected causing both parents to die of the infection. According to Luo tradition widows are inherited by in-laws, causing infection to spread to other households within the extended family.
Safe drinking water, food and sanitation are next to impossible to find. Many lack access to these basic needs as well as to affordable health care services. These unfortunate problems that have been created force these children to a life of prostitution or stealing that eventually will lead to death.
Mission Goals:The key problem that Mama Tina Resource Center seeks to address is the access by orphans to the basic needs (food, shelter, education) including protection and curative health care.The goal of this project is to provide these basic necessities to Mama Tina orphans. With their needs met these children will have the opportunity to be successful members and leaders of their society pushing Kenya toward a brighter future.
To meet the goal of this project we have set a number of current objectives:
- Promote and enhance nutrition of orphans in Nyangeta Sub-location.
- Enhance access to lucrative care services for orphans.
- Enhance access to preventive care services to orphans.
- Promote access to basic education for orphans.
- Provide care and support to small children through the empowerment of community structures.
- Provide continued support and care to promote family involvement and participation in caring for the less privileged members in the community.
- Care and support in event of social-economic impact of a catastrophe.
The positive impacts that these objectives will create will be seen in three major areas:
- AIDS orphans will be emotionally and psychologically well adjusted and be able to
face new challenges in life with confidence and high self-esteem. This will lead to better performance in school, better social orientation and they will have the skills be effective community leaders in the future. - Lead to higher social moral standards as the guardians can advise the children
against high-risk behavior in the long run, this will result in lower incidence of AIDS cases in the community. - There will be better collaboration and networking among community leaders and
government officials. This will lead to better interaction and information exchange
thereby enhancing the community capacity for creative change.
